Description
The actor and theatre director Yuusuke Kafuku is married to the screenwriter Oto. At first glance, the two lead a happy marriage. On closer inspection, however, this harmony is deceptive. Their daughter died 17 years ago, and their relationship seems to be slowly crumbling because Yuusuke catches his wife having sex with another man. Yuusuke doesn’t let it show, but Oto tells him she wants to discuss something with him that evening. He doesn’t find out what she wants to tell him. However, when he returns home from work, he finds his wife lying on the floor — she has died of a brain haemorrhage. During a performance, Yuusuke suffers a breakdown and can no longer continue.
Two years have now passed, and Yuusuke has still not gotten over the death of his wife. He agrees to direct the play “Uncle Vanya” by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. Because of his condition, he is advised not to drive but to get a chauffeur. Yuusuke is initially against it, but when the young Misaki Watari turns out to be a good driver, he changes his mind. Misaki is a little reserved at first, but the two soon start talking and slowly begin to open up to each other. So not only does Yuusuke tell of his tragic strokes of fate, but also Misaki, who has already experienced a lot of bad things in her still young life …

“Drive My Car” is based on the short story of the same name by author Haruki Murakami.
