»Es war, als wenn plötzlich das Licht in unserem Hause erloschen wäre«, sagt der verwitwete Samurai Munezo, als erst seine kleine Schwester Shino und dann seine Dienerin Kie das Haus verlassen, um zu heiraten. Während es Shino bei Munezos Freund Shimada an nichts mangelt, durchlebt Kie in ihrer Ehe ein wahres Martyrium. Als Munezo davon erfährt, ist es fast zu spät und der Samurai trifft eine folgenschwere Entscheidung.
Doch seine Gefühle für Kie sind nicht die einzigen, die ihn in Bedrängnis bringen: Eines Tages kehrt sein Freund Yaichiro zurück aus Edo - und das in Ketten! Munezo soll ihm im Duell gegenübertreten …
